A still from 'Batti Gul Meter Chalu'.

Director: Shree Narayan Singh

Cast: Shahid Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor, Divyendu Sharma, Yami Gautam

Toilet: Ek Prem Katha director Shree Narayan Singh has managed to bring Shahid Kapoor and Shraddha Kapoor back on screen post their hit chemistry in Haider.

The spark between these two is still alive, but it really shines on screen only after the interval.

Shahid, like most times, had picked a character with a graph. He has a charm which people, mostly men fall for, and it isn't in the way you are thinking.

Shraddha Kapoor on the other hand is an aspiring fashion designer from Tehri who believes she's better than even the A-listers from the industry.

The third pivotal character to be introduced is Pyaar Ka Punchnama fame Divyendu Sharma, who also played Akshay Kumar's friend in Toilet. Hold on, because the character isn't the same nor is the length and importance of his role. Divyendu plays the ideal friend, son and is husband material (like Taapsee Pannu found Abhishek Bachchan in Manmarziyaan). But will he get the girl he desires?

Beginning with a special tale of friendship to then a courtroom drama, Batti Gul Meter Chalu grows on you and a special mention goes to Shahid Kapoor for the same. He is brilliant as the street smart lawyer and his accent and witty remarks leave you entertained as well as impacted.

The issue of electricity scam which people need to be aware of, is revealed in the second half of this film and there on, Narayan Singh's movie takes some turns and twists which will leave you hopeful.

What the verdict of the court is, will be something that you witness once you watch the film, but I can assure you one thing, if you are a Shahid fan, you won't be disappointed. The actor even does a Ranbir Kapoor in the film and it came at an unexpected time, but was a pleasant surprise.

Shraddha Kapoor is seen wearing some trendy fashion statement dresses which made her character appear more real. Her power of taking decisions, or at least trying to, despite the situations around her, is what every girl will feel proud of.

Divyendu, miles apart from the characters he has played, tries hard to get noticed but ends up doing only fair job.

Yami, who comes for brief time in the film (probably for the best scene), could have played a stronger contender, but she too, seems to have fallen for Shahid's charm, and we wouldn't blame her in person or in the movie because we totally see why that happened.

The movie also sees Farida Jalal, who once again plays an adorable family member post Kuch Kuch Hota Hai.

It has many other faces - known as well as unknown, but while they seem to go too fast in the first half of the film, more side characters appear dragged in second half.

Considering Shraddha is fashion designer in the film, the director too seems to have taken care about the kind of clothes his characters wear. Shahid wears a black jacket over some coloured tee in one situation and goes white in another. Similarly Shraddha is dressed aptly for any occasion, except the mystery of her clothes during courtroom scenes, which by the way, are a mystery even after the movie is over. Or it is a hidden clue, you decide.

Narayan Singh also ensures that the sets are perfect for an occasion. He makes use of natural setting when required or else goes on with some realistic sets which don't leave you complaining. He goes colourful in a scene, rather in the song, Gold Tamba, but that too is forgiven considering it is a happy occasion in the film.

The way this director has used his cinematography is on point, and the choreography too works 98% of the times. The dialogues of course are brilliant in some places and get enhanced with performances like Shahid's, and at some places, Shraddha's and Yami's.

The good part in this movie is that it takes references from Bollywood and cricket, which is a relief in some tense situations.

To sum it up, Shahid is the gravy of a spicy misal while Shraddha, Yami, Divyendu and other actors are just the toppings which make it delicious when added in lesser quantity.
