It was as a costume designer that Indrans entered films, but he later bid adieu to that career and shifted focus to acting, to become one of the popular comedians of Malayalam cinema for the past three decades. However, these days, shedding his comic image, Indrans is seen more in serious roles. And his two recent movies — Godsay and Kaadu Pookunna Neram — too project his serious avatars.

On his role in Kaadu Pookunna Neram, he says, “I have known director Dr Biju for the past few years and was part of his previous films Akashathinte Niram and Perariyathavar.

“One day, he called me and talked about this project and I got in.” In Godsay, which is in theatres now, he acts as a Gandhian.

Is it a good period for parallel movies as those flicks are also getting theatres and viewers? “Of course, it is a good time for cinema. Many people — who are also avid readers — are coming forward to watch these movies. But the sad part is that many directors who are making this kind of films are not coming forward to release their products. At the same time, they complain that their films are not getting screens. Earlier, directors of films which bagged awards were found releasing their films at least for morning shows. Now, only a few directors are taking the initiative to arrange a release for their movie,” he points out

Quizzed about this change from comic roles to serious avatars, he laughs, “A government employee will be promoted to next rank after a few years of service. The change in my career is also like that. But it doesn't mean that it was an easy or sudden process. I have been here in the industry for the past few years and it was gradually that I started getting different roles.”
