KOCHI: Actor Mohanlal is set to be the next president of the Association of Malayalam Movie Artists (AMMA), taking over the reins from Innocent who has  declared that he is stepping down. The association will announce the newly-elected office-bearers in the coming general body meeting in Kochi on June 24. Mohanlal is currently  the vice-president of AMMA along with K.B. Ganesh Kumar. Actor Mammootty is also stepping down as general secretary.

The association is yet to announce Idavela babu,  who is holding the post of secretary, as his successor. Idavela Babu said that he cannot reveal the decisions taken by the AMMA executive at this point of time. "As I am holding the office of the secretary of AMMA, I cannot disclose the details before June 14 when the election process ends,"  he  told Déccan Chronicle. "There are speculations about  some members of the organisation which  are not true," he  added.

Innocent is stepping down as  president after holding the office for 17 years. Debates were going on in the social media and other platforms about the election for a long time. The election takes place once in three years. Currently,  Mohanlal is in Australia and he will be back in Kerala before the general body meeting.

The organisation is holding  its first general body and election after the actress abduction case that happened on February 18, 2017, after which the new organization, Women in Cinema Collective was set up. The WCC had demanded 50 percent quota for women artistes in AMMA. It is not clear  whether anyone from WCC has given nomination to the AMMA posts.
