Merryland Studio's S Chandran Is No More
Several celebrities belonging to the Malayalam film industry are mourning the death of S Chandran.
S Chandran, the prominent figure in Kerala's film exhibition and studio business, is no more. He was the director of City Theatres and the son of P. Subramaniam, the founder of the historic Merryland Studio in Thiruvananthapuram. He passed away on Tuesday at the age of 90.
After his father's passing, S. Chandran took over the management of the studio and several iconic cinemas in the capital. Three of his theatres are the oldest surviving movie theaters in Thiruvananthapuram. It's said that he ran those theatres despite setbacks and thinning crowds for many movies in the age of OTT.
Among the celebs who condoled the death is Kamal Haasan. "More than our professional association and more than the fact that many of my films ran for long periods in his theatres, what truly connected us was our shared love for the arts. He was an ardent admirer of art, with a special interest in photography," the Thug Life actor wrote.
