Vijay's fan clubs gradually evolved into the Vijay Makkal Iyakkam (VMI), which undertook social service and civic activities across Tamil Nadu beginning around 2009. On February 2, 2024, Vijay formally launched the party Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK). In March 2026, Vijay announced that TVK would contest all 234 Assembly seats.
