All Decks Cleared For Rajinikanth Kochadaiiyaan Re-Release?
A remastered version of the film Kochadaiiyaan enhanced with AI technology and unveiled a trailer have raised expectations of Rajini fans.
Rajinikanth's animated period action film Kochadaiiyaan, directed by his daughter Soundarya Rajinikanth, was released in 2014 but ended up as one of the biggest disappointments at the box office. Earlier this year, the makers announced a remastered version of the film enhanced with AI technology and unveiled a trailer, raising expectations for a re-release.
However, despite the announcement, there were no official updates on the release date, triggering speculation about possible legal issues. According to sources, a Chennai-based financial firm sought to stall the re-release over a long-pending monetary dispute dating back to the film's original release.
The dispute reportedly stems from financial assistance extended to the makers during Kochadaiiyaan's production. In return, the firm claimed it was owed Rs 20 crore. Following the film's poor theatrical performance, the amount allegedly remained unpaid, and a cheque issued by the production side reportedly bounced. The firm subsequently initiated legal proceedings in 2014, with the court directing the producers to settle the dues.
When the remastered version was announced, the firm again approached the Madras High Court, seeking to halt its release. However, during the recent hearing, the court refused to stay the re-release.
The judge observed that the financial dispute was between the Chennai-based firm and Mediaone Global Entertainment, which had sold the film to Eros International on a first-copy basis. Since Eros International was not directly connected to the financial dispute, the court held that stopping the film's release would unfairly affect an unrelated party.
With the court declining to grant a stay, the legal hurdle surrounding Kochadaiiyaan's remastered version appears to have been cleared. The focus now shifts to the makers, who are expected to announce a release date soon. It remains to be seen whether the AI-enhanced version can find a better reception from audiences than the original film did in 2014.
