Still from Mersal.

Vijay’s Mersal, released last Deepavali, was dragged into several controversies but eventually turned out to be a blockbuster. Now, the Thalapathy starrer, directed by Atlee, has won the ‘Best Picture’ award at the National Film Awards UK in the Foreign Language category.

Highly rated films from various countries like Happy  End (France), Loveless (Russia), In the Fade (Germany), The Square (Sweden, Germany, France) Vaya (South Africa), The Insult (Lebanon) and A fantastic woman (Chile) were also in contention, and it was Mersal, the official entry from India, which won the award.

The film produced by Thenandal Studios provided wholesome entertainment with Vijay playing a triple role, with Nithya Menen, Kajal Aggarwal and Samantha being his foils. AR Rahman’s peppy numbers were also a huge draw for the movie.
