Sam CS of Vikram Vedha fame will be making his debut in Malayalam with a period film Odiyan in which top star Mohanlal will be essaying the titular character of a man possessing shape shifting abilities and assuming animal forms. Sam, who has his kitty full with half a dozen movies, talks to DC as to how he got the Lalettan film offer, how he instantly gave his nod after listening to the stimulating fantasy thriller script and the ancient Kerala instruments he will be using.

“Soon after the release of Vikram Vedha I got many offers including from Bollywood for background score. But I am a staunch believer that I have to offer a wholesome package to a film rather than being confined to a particular zone. But, I couldn’t refuse when I was approached for Mohanlal sir’s Odiyan. So intriguing was its premise laced with non-linear narration,” says Sam CS.

Music plays a prominent role in the film, he adds. “It's a thriller set against the backdrop of a particular time period and region, which gave me an instant ideation to utilise the ancient ethnic musical instruments of Kerala,” Sam states.
Elaborating on a traditional instrument he used for Odiyan, he says, "So far, when we think of the bamboo instrument, normally it means flutes.  But there is 6-feet long bamboo instrument which is known for casting aesthetic spells. And after scouting, we came across just one old lady who knows how to play the ancient instrument and we used her for this film.”

Some of Sam’s upcoming films are Karu, Gorilla, Adanga Maru, Mr. Chandramouli, Vanjagar and Ulagam.
