As he prepares for the release of Pariyerum Perumal, which hits the screens today, actor Kathir says that an incredible amount of hard work has gone into the project produced by Pa Ranjith.

“I willingly approached director Maari Selvaraj when I heard about PP, and he felt I would suit the titular role. An actor needs the space to prove his talent, and PP has created that space and given me the scope to perform,” Kathir reveals.

He adds, “Even while hearing the script, I knew I would have to work very hard in terms of building my physical and mental stamina. I was prepared for it. We shot for 45 days under the scorching sun in Tirunelveli, and Maari would shoot scenes that involved running, jumping, falling down and then running back for two-and-a-half hours at a stretch. Even to find shelter, you’d have to walk a mile (smiles).”

We ask Kathir why he chooses such off-beat subjects when his peers clearly prefer light-hearted masala movies, and he responds. “I want to do experimental roles that will have a long-lasting impact on the minds of the audience. I want people to debate about my films. It was heart-warming to hear director Ram sir say that PP would elevate me as a commercial hero.”

The actor currently has Sigai, which has him in two new avatars including a female one, a film with Kumaran, and Chathru in his kitty.
