It was not easy for Usha Krishnan, a former associate of Suseenthiran, to convince herself to don the director’s cap. But now, the filmmaker is confident that her debut film Raja Manthiri will strike the right chord with the audiences.
She says, “This is a full-on village entertainer that focuses on the relationship between two brothers. Kalaiarasan and Kaali Venkat play brothers in the movie. Even before Kalaiarasan signed Madras, I got him on board.”

Ask her what made her to do a village-based subject, and Usha tells us, “There’s a market for realistic films. With the combination of commercialisation and good content, we can churn out successful movies.” Usha is concerned about the dearth of top women directors and screenwriters. “There are only a handful of successful women in the technical side, and that brought me here. When a man approaches producers, they listen to him but when a woman does it, they don't listen to the script. Blame it on the market trend. It’s male-centric. When more women come into the busine ss, more mea ningful movies will be made,” she concludes. Up next, she’s working on a romantic comedy.
