The release of Suriya’s much-anticipated film Soorarai Pottru has been postponed indefinitely. One of the first big Tamil films to opt for a direct OTT release, it was to have been aired on Amazon Prime on October 30.

This has come as a rude shock to Suriya’s fans and a surprise to theatre owners and exhibitors in Tamil Nadu who were at loggerheads with him on his decision to skip theatres and release the movie directly on an OTT platform. The movie is a fictionalised version of the book Simply Fly on the life of Air Deccan founder Captain G.R. Gopinath.

Suriya in a detailed statement has revealed the reasons for the delay in airing SP as planned. The Singam actor said, “When we started Soorarai Pottru, we thought the only challenges we would face would be shooting at never-before-shot-locations, working with people of different languages and bringing in personnel with different skill sets to bring the magnificent world of Maara. Though easily said, it was a mammoth task to execute.”

The actor said SP, with its compelling and inspiring story, is very close to his heart but unfortunately, the wait for the film’s release will now be a little longer than anticipated.

“Since the film focused on the aviation industry, and deals with the real Indian Air Force aircraft and security, we have to procure multiple permissions and norms. A few NOCs are still pending for approval and we understand that the wait is inevitable as this adverse time is demanding more focus on the nation and its priorities than anything else,” the statement said.

Directed by Sudha Kongara, the movie has Aparna Balamurali as the female lead. Produced by Suriya’s home banner 2D Entertainment, the film is named Aakasam Nee Haddura in Telugu.
