Kamal Haasan tweet points to shameful caste violence

Kamal Haasan’s viral tweet  on a song, which he and maestro Ilayaraja wrote for his jinxed period historical drama Marudhanayagam and which  speaks about social discrimination 300 years ago, draws a reference to the violence that broke out at Ponparappi dalit settlement in Ariyalur district in Tamil Nadu on polling day (April 18).

That day, Ponparappi witnessed a hate crime aimed at the dalits whose houses were ransacked and vehicles were stoned and people injured.

Kamal has pointed out that it is a shame that the lyrics of the song, which start with the line Madhamkondu Vandhadhu Saadhi, remind us that caste still figures in our contemporary social scene.
