A decade ago, villagers living on the Cauvery belt were thriving on a particular fish species called ‘Uliri’ for their livelihood. Filmmaker Jayakanthan, who belongs to Kumbakonam says these species have gone extinct due to industrialisation and other manmade causes. He has made a film titled Uliri, which talks about the present plight of those villages and how they have to resort to other profession to make a living.

“I have made considerable research on it and how these people have lost their identity. I shot the film on the actual locations like Kumbakonam, Jayamkondan etc. While Suresh and Sayani play the lead pair, I have made the film with romance interlaced and based on real life incidents”, claims Jayakanthan.
