With expectations soaring high for ‘Kantara: Chapter 1’, the makers are reportedly quoting around ₹40 crore for the Telugu dubbing rights, ahead of its scheduled release on October 2. “The craze for this socio-fantasy film will likely be double that of the original, and it should take sensational openings in the Telugu states — though I’m not sure about the exact rates,” says noted writer Gopi Mohan. He praises actor-director Rishab Shetty as a powerhouse of talent. “He’s a fine actor, a skilled director, and slips into his roles effortlessly. Plus, his writing team truly understands the pulse of the audience,” he adds.
Recalling the phenomenal success of the first part, Gopi Mohan notes, “I think Kantara was initially bought for ₹4 crore in the Telugu states and went on to collect a distributor share of ₹30 crore, completely transforming the perception of Kannada cinema.” He also highlights the disciplined approach of Hombale Films. “They’re focused producers who stick to planned budgets and don’t splurge unnecessarily. Rishab himself is a meticulous planner and executes his vision effectively,” he points out.
Gopi Mohan feels that god-centric stories have been striking a strong chord with Telugu audiences. “Look at ‘Karthikeya 2’ and ‘HanuMan’ — both resonated deeply not only in the Telugu market but worldwide. Today’s viewers prefer fresh, socially relevant narratives intertwined with myth and mysticism. The days of straightforward devotional films seem to be fading; instead, stories blending divine elements with social messages are catching on, especially among the younger audience,” he explains.
He also recalls how the iconic ‘Varaha Roopam’ song from ‘Kantara’ went viral across social media, along with memorable scenes like the breathtaking climax where Rishab attains superpowers. “Those visuals and moments still linger in the minds of viewers,” Gopi Mohan concludes. “If the content remains strong and refreshing, this prequel truly has the potential to strike a chord — and mint gold at the box office.”
