‘A harbinger to the end of the American empire’ — that’s what conservative FOX News commentator Carlson Tucker called Cardi B and Megan Thee Stallion’s performance of their single WAP at the recently held Grammy Awards.
When it had released last years, WAP had divided music lovers and yet inspired a lot many. In an interview to GQ, Megan had said, “Some people just don’t know what to do when a woman is in control and taking ownership of her own body. I feel like for a long time men felt like they owned sex and now women are saying, ‘Hey, this is for me. I want pleasure. This is how I want it or don’t want it.’ It freaks men the hell out.”
But even as people forgot about the uproar these women’s pleasure points had caused, the duo, Megan and Cardi B, performed the song at the Grammys, complete with the explicit lyrics and X-rated pole-dancing by the pair.
And Carlson Tucker, a self-appointed guardian of American morals, decided to take offence to it, saying the song was intentionally trying to degrade the American culture and hurt their children. “It’s hard not to conclude they’re intentionally trying to degrade our culture and hurt our children,” he said.
Carlson was discussing the song with another conservative Republican supporter, Candace Owens, a black who had previously come under a lot of criticism for her controversial views on George Floyd’s death and for saying a ‘racism angle’ was brought to the death.
The FOX commentator went on to point at the ‘cancel culture’, which has been discussed increasingly recently, especially after Dr Seuss’s books’ over-racist imagery has taken the foreground. Calling out the ‘cancel culture’ over racist imageries, Carlson added, “It [the Grammy performance] feels more sinister.”
Candace added to the talk, calling the WAP performance a celebration of ‘perversity.’ “This is starting to me to seem like it’s not even left or right, it’s not a political issue. This seems like an attack on American values, American traditions, and you’re actually actively trying to make children aspire to things that are grotesque,” she added.
While the anti-porn groups and especially Carlson argue the degradation of American values because of WAP, maybe Carlson needs a reminder that he’s been an open supporter of former President Donald Trump despite gloating over ‘grabbing women by their p***y’ and being accused in multiple sexual assault cases throughout his presidency
