Mumbai: Production giant 20th Century Fox has halted production on Queen biopic 'Bohemian Rhapsody' due to the absence of its director, Bryan Singer.

The production company have been forced to halt production for the Freddie Mercury biopic due to a personal ''health matter'' affecting the producer Bryan Singer, according to the Hollywood Reporter.

A spokesperson for Twentieth Century Fox confirmed to the publication that they have "temporarily halted production on 'Bohemian Rhapsody' due to the unexpected unavailability of Bryan Singer".

A source also said Singer, 52, didn't return to filming, which is taking place in the UK, after the Thanksgiving break and producers were reportedly talking about ''potentially replacing him'' with a new director.

Despite the delay, it's thought that the December 2018 release date will stay the same.

After much speculation, the cast details were confirmed in August 2018.

It was announced that 'Mr. Robot' star Rami Malek will be playing the lead role of Freddie Mercury in the movie, while Ben Hardy is playing drummer Roger Taylor. Gwilym Lee ('The Hollow Crown') will portray lead guitarist Brian May and Joe Mazzello ('The Social Network') will tackle the role of bass guitarist John Deacon.

The film is slated to release on December 25, 2018 in the U.S.
