Guru Dutt Centenary to Feature Nationwide Retrospective, 4K Premiere of Pyaasa
Ultra Media & NFDC-NFAI to bring restored classics like Pyaasa, Aar Paar and more to theatres across India this August
Indian cinema lovers are in for a nostalgic celebration as legendary filmmaker Guru Dutt’s centenary year will be commemorated with a nationwide theatrical retrospective of his timeless classics, including the 4K restored premiere of Pyaasa. Curated by Ultra Media and Entertainment, in collaboration with NFDC-NFAI, the retrospective will run in theatres across India from August 8 to 10.
The tribute will showcase five of Guru Dutt’s most acclaimed films in restored versions — Pyaasa, Aar Paar, Chaudhvin Ka Chand, Mr. & Mrs. 55, and Baaz — allowing both long-time admirers and a new generation of cinephiles to experience the master’s poetic vision on the big screen.
The meticulous restoration has been spearheaded by NFDC-NFAI as part of the National Film Heritage Mission, an initiative by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting, aimed at preserving and reviving India’s cinematic legacy.
“Guru Dutt’s films are timeless masterpieces that have influenced generations of filmmakers and audiences alike,” said Sushilkumar Agrawal, MD & CEO of Ultra Media, which holds the rights to the films. “We are honoured to present these classics in restored versions.”
Prakash Magdum, Managing Director, NFDC, added, “Restoring Guru Dutt’s films goes far beyond reviving old reels. It’s about safeguarding a priceless legacy that defines the soul of Indian cinema.”
The centenary retrospective stands as a powerful tribute to Guru Dutt’s unique blend of visual poetry and emotional depth that has stood the test of time. This special cinematic event offers a rare chance to relive his magic — as it was meant to be seen — in theatres, on the big screen.
