Marvel Studios has just released the second trailer for their highly anticipated film, Spider-Man: Brand New Day, and it has quite a lot to unpack. The trailer for the fourth installment of the Spider-Man franchise offers a deeper probe into Peter Parker’s (played by Tom Holland) life, four years on from the aftermath of the events in the preceding film, Spider-Man: No Way Home.

The trailer hits the ground running with a frenetic fight scene between Spider-Man and the Scorpion (played by Michael Mando), poised to be one of the supervillains in the film. We see Spider-Man losing himself and going off the deep end in trying to fight him, even destroying a police car in the attempt.

Following this, Peter is seen reminiscing about his former friend Ned (played by Jacob Batalon) and then-girlfriend MJ (played by Zendaya) while watching Ned’s YouTube videos. He struggles to move on from the sacrifice he makes at the end of No Way Home, where Doctor Strange’s spell wipes out the memory of everyone who knew Spider-Man’s real identity, which included Ned and MJ. Parker immerses himself in being full-time Spider-Man now, but we see his emotional turmoil as he grapples with the grief of losing Aunt May and loneliness after losing his closest friends.

The limelight falls onto the most important detail, Peter advancing from mechanical to organic webshooters. As exciting and Tobey-Maguire-esque as it is to see Holland’s Spider-Man shooting webs out of his wrists, this ability aggravates uncontrolled mutations leading to drastic physical and mental changes within him.

This gives way to the next interesting segment in the trailer, Mark Ruffalo’s Hulk, whose assistance Peter seeks in order to understand and control his mutations. However, we see a pulse-pounding showdown unfold between them, a shocking moment that has the fandom on the edge of their seats. A chilling and much more feral version of Bruce Banner, the “Savage Hulk”, arises.

So many important moments in the trailer, but the centre of speculation has always been around only one character since day one: Sadie Sink. As soon as the trailer came out, fans were quick to dissect the mysteriously hooded redhead in the teaser, identifying it as Sink. Ever since her confirmation in the project, Sink’s character has been tightly under wraps, giving rise to a frenzy of fan theories, most of which anticipate her playing the classic X-Man Jean Grey. From what we can see, her character has telepathic powers as she taps into the minds of everyone else around her, going on to take the entire city under her control. She seems to have triggered Savage Hulk as well. However, we see her telling Spider-Man vicariously via a proxy, “You’re the only person I can’t jump into.” Is Sadie Sink going to play the main supervillain of the film? How is her character going to fit into the future of the MCU? As of now, we can only ponder.

Other notable moments from the trailer include Spider-Man consulting Frank Castle (The Punisher, played by Jon Bernthal), most likely for MJ’s safety, and the appearance of Tramell Tillman’s mystery character, William Metzger, leader of the anti-mutant militia in X-Men. Spider-Man’s newfound powers give electrifying action sequences throughout, especially the magnificent web tornado that he weaves in a battle against the deadly ninja clan named The Hand. A cheeky easter egg was placed on a board in Ned’s room referring to a “Latino Parkour Prodigy” – a possible Miles Morales reference?

The trailer has whipped the internet into a fever as fans anticipate Brand New Day to be the franchise’s closing emotional rollercoaster and a definitive precedent to Marvel Studios’ highly coveted film Avengers: Doomsday, releasing later this year. Spider-Man: Brand New Day swings into theatres on June 30 in India.
