Sixteen years ago actress Manisha Koirala was signed to play Indira Gandhi in a film written by Kamleshwar, directed by N. Chandra and bankrolled by Nittin Keni, the producer of Gadar.

Then, the actress had given an interview saying, “I have signed the film after looking at it from an actress’ point of view. Mrs Gandhi was a strong woman who implemented radical changes. I have gotten to know her better because of the film, and I find her to be a very interesting person.” But that project never took off.

Now, having played Nargis in the Sanjay Dutt biopic, Sanju, Koirala’s raring to go and she still hopes to play the matriarch of the Gandhi family. “I am good to go now. I am looking to play powerful characters and as far as biopics are concerned. I would love to play Indira Gandhi,” she says.

It remains to be seen if her wish is granted as Vidya Balan has acquired the rights to Sagarika Ghose’s book Indira: India’s most powerful Prime Minister.
