Mumbai: It takes just a few seconds of watching the trailer of Shakuntala Devi, Vidya Balan's latest film on the life of the late mathematician, to know that here is another tailor-made role for the multifaceted actress.

Shakuntala Devi was known for her ability to make incredibly swift calculations, a genius discovered at age five. For such a quicksilver intellect, only an effervescent actor could have done justice.

"Stepping into the world of Shakuntala Devi was as intimidating as it was exhilarating," said Vidya Balan in a statement released ahead of the opening of the fllm on July 31. "Her story is inspirational and makes you want to believe in yourself."

Directed by Anu Menon, Shakuntala Devi is among the first major movies to switch to the digital platform owing to the coronavirus lockdown, which has led to the closing of cinema screens across the country. Shakuntala Devi follows the current Bollywoo trend of biopics but the story of a woman mathematician who broke rules and set her own seems an apt subject for a streaming audience rather than the multiplex crowd.

Balan, 41, said a digital release will ensure that the film reaches a global audience.

The trailer, unveiled on Wednesday, gives an insight into Vidya Balan interprets her character. It is clear that she has given it her all, making the mathematician unapologetic and unconventional.

Shakuntala Devi also stars Sanya Malhotra, Amit Sadh, and Jisshu Sengupta. It is produced by Sony Pictures Networks Productions and Vikram Malhotra.
