Ashutosh Gowariker’s recent release Panipat maybe going rather slow at the turnstiles, but what cannot be undermined is the fact that the maker was possibly the first in this modern era to start making historicals mounted on an extra-large canvas.
This is what Karan Johar also aspires to do in his ambitious film called Takht, which sees the hatred between brothers and the Moghul family that once ruled India.
“When Ashutosh made Jodhaa Akbar in 2008, it was a huge film. Everyone spoke about the canvas of the film, how a certain amount of special effects were used, and how large the film looked in terms of a visual treat. Sanjay Leela Bhansali emulated that feat when he made Bajirao Mastani. And now after Ashutosh has done Panipat, Karan Johar has quite a few leaves to pluck out from their books when he makes his most ambitious directorial venture till date, which also happens to be a historical subject. These three filmmakers are some of the best we have, and they happen to be great friends too,” says an industry source.
