Bollywood superstar Aamir Khan married his longtime partner Gauri Spratt in a private civil ceremony in Mumbai on July 4. The wedding has garnered a lot of attention because it is Khan's third marriage.
Some reports claimed, after the wedding, a fatwa was issued against the actor by Maulana Ibrahim Hussain, the Shahi Chief Mufti of the Muslim Personal Darul Ifta.
As per ANI, the religious ruling was issued because Gauri is a non-Muslim. Maulana Ibrahim Hussain said that, according to his interpretation of Sharia, a Muslim man is not allowed to marry a non-Muslim woman unless she accepts Islam. In a video shared online, he said that such interfaith marriages are considered forbidden and called them "sin." He also said that those who do not recognise such acts as sinful will be answerable to Allah.
The Maulana also criticised the idea of marrying multiple times. He said that if a person cannot fulfil the responsibilities of a marriage, they should not marry again.
Pointing to the Khan, he mentioned that the actor had recently entered into a third marriage with a non-Muslim woman and mentioned that protests over the marriage had taken place in some sections of society.
Aamir Khan was first married to Reena Dutta in 1986. The couple share two children, Junaid Khan and Ira Khan. They later separated in 2002 after 16 years of marriage.
He later married filmmaker Kiran Rao in 2005, and have a son Azad Rao Khan through surrogacy in 2011. The couple announced their separation in 2021 but said they would continue to co-parent their son.
Aamir recently married Gauri Spratt in a registered ceremony under the Special Marriage Act after being in a long-term relationship.
