ANANTAPUR: With campus selections and better quality of education, the demand for IIIT seats has been witnessing a huge growth, and expectations are that the applicants would be fifteen times more than the number of actual seats on offer.

Though, the notification and admissions process was delayed due to technical reasons, RGUKT (Rajiv Gandhi University of Knowledge and Technologies) has issued notification well in time this year for admissions to four IIIT campuses -- Idupulapaya, Nuzvid , Ongole and Srikakulam -- covering all regions of the state.

A total of 4,400 seats – 1,100 in each IIIT campus -- will be filled including 400 seats under EWS quota. The delay in completion of the admission process last year was because the process for the setting of roster points for students took time.

RGUKT vice chancellor Prof. K.C. Reddy said classes would start from August first week after completion of the admission process by July-end. The notification was issued on June 3 and candidates can apply till June 26. While the state government increased the PH quota from 3 to 5 per cent, seats will be filled by following the change in the reservation system.

The IIIT concept was introduced during Y.S. Rajasekhar Reddy’s term, with an aim to provide quality of education for the rural and poor students after completion of SSC to enable them get Engineering certificate after six years of study.

Normally, the rural people, mostly from financially weaker sections, are unable to afford huge sums for payment towards fees and other expenses during the course of engineering study. The concept of IIIT system offering 6-year courses with hostel facilities free of cost became a priority for the people of rural areas in AP. A 4  per cent deprivation score will be added for students who have studied in government high schools.

Sources said the PH and sports reservation quota certificates will be verified at Nuzvid from July 5-9. While verification of certificates for other students of Idupulapaya and Nuzvid would be done from July 21-22, students from Srikakulam and Ongol will have to have certification verification on July 24-25.
