Over Rs 1 crore foreign currency seized at Rajiv Gandhi International Airport

The passenger, Ashraf, was arrested and produced before the special Judge for Economic Offence Court at Nampally.

Hyderabad: Directorate of Revenue Intelligence sleuths on Friday morning seized Rs 1.19 crore of foreign currency from an outbound passenger at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport.

According to DRI additional director-general M.K. Singh, Hyderabad zonal unit acted based on specific intelligence report and seized Euros and UAE Dirhams. The passenger has been identified as Mohammed Ahsraf Ali of Hyderabad.

“The passenger was intercepted when he was attempting to board Air Arabia flight G 9 459 bound for Sharjah after having cleared immigration and security checks. On examination of the passenger's baggage, foreign currencies were found concealed in clothes inside the bag. During interrogation, he had confessed to smuggling the foreign currency” said an official.

The passenger, Ashraf, was arrested and produced before the special Judge for Economic Offence Court at Nampally. He was remanded to judicial custody and an investigation is on.
