The Atal Behari Vajpayee government tried to give him the Bharat Ratna in 2000, but it was rejected by then President K.R. Narayanan.

This is perhaps for the first time that any political party promised to offer a “Bharat Ratna” in its manifesto.

Mukherjee expressed his gratitude to Rashtrapati Bhawan and people of the nation for bestowing the Bharat Ratna on him.

Former prime minister Manmohan Singh too was not seen at the ceremony.

Mukherjee was greeted on receiving the accolade by PM Modi, Vice President Naidu and slew of other leaders who were present at ceremony.
