Pune: Swedish luxury car maker Volvo on Friday said it achieved a new milestone as it produced its 10,000th made-in-India vehicle in the country. The 10,000th car to roll out was the Volvo XC40 Recharge, a sign of the brand's growing popularity in the premium electric vehicle segment. The company locally assembles all its models in India namely the XC90, XC60, S90, XC40 Recharge and the recently launched C40 Recharge.

Local assembly of Volvo cars began at the brand’s Hoskote plant, near Bangalore in 2017. It took 6 years for the company to cross the 10,000 units production milestone.

The first model that was built at the Hoskote facility was the XC90. With over 4,000 units sold, the XC60 makes up the majority of cars produced to date. At present, the XC40 Recharge is one of the best-selling models in India for Volvo, with over 500 units sold. In 2023, Volvo registered a growth of 31 per cent compared to the previous year. The carmaker sold 2,423 units, including 921 units of the XC60 and 180 units of the XC40 Recharge.

“It is indeed a matter of pride for the company to have reached this milestone in a short span of time in spite of nearly three years of pandemic disruptions. The steady increase of capacities at Bangalore reflects our commitment to India’s luxury mobility segment,” said Jyoti Malhotra, MD at Volvo Car India.

“Rolling out the 10,000th car is indeed a major milestone for our plant. Since 2017 we have been increasing our capacities to meet customer demand and have also continuously undertaken skill upgradation leading to the successful assembly of EVs. Our plant also holds the proud distinction of having rolled out India’s first domestically assembled EV, our XC40 Recharge,” said Gao Feng, Production Head at Volvo Car India.
