CHENNAI: With $12 billion valued imports, electronics goods as a category was a major driver of merchandise imports after crude oil in April. With lower exports, it also drove the trade deficit.

Electronic goods imports were up 38.2 per cent to $12.7 billion in April against $9.2 billion in the same month last year. It was the second largest import category after crude oil, imports of which were valued at $18.6 billion. However, crude oil import growth, mostly driven by fuel price hike, was down 10 per cent.

On the other hand, electronic goods exports stood at $5.1 billion, growing 40 per cent compared to $3.69 billion in the same month last year.

Interestingly, the imports were 60 per cent higher at $12.7 billion compared to exports of $5.1 billion.

“Our electronic manufacturing is just picking up. Most of the exports happen in smartphones and they are majorly assembling. But we also have a huge domestic market which consumes electronic goods in large quantities,” said Ajay Srivastava, founder, GTRI.

India's electronic goods imports crossed the $100 billion mark in FY26, rising 17.76% to $116.17 billion from $98.65 billion in FY25
