BMW Overtakes Archrival Mercedes in Jan-June Sales
BMW's aggressive sales push was driven in the entry-level luxury and electric vehicle markets, notably with the BMW iX1 and BMW 5 Series.
Pune: BMW Group India on Wednesday said it overtook its compatriot archrival Mercedes-Benz in January-June luxury vehicle registrations in India for the first time in over a decade.
BMW's aggressive sales push was driven in the entry-level luxury and electric vehicle markets, notably with the BMW iX1 and BMW 5 Series.
“We not only overtook Mercedes-Benz in Q1 by selling 200 plus units more than them but we also outnumbered them by retailing over 300 units in Q2,” Hardeep Singh Brar, President and CEO at BMW Group India told Financial Chronicle, citing government Vahan registration data.
As per Vahan dashboard, BMW retailed a total of 10,043 units in January-June period while Mercedes-Benz registered 9,472 units.
“We are now well positioned to hit the pole position in the luxury car market at the end of CY2026,” Brar said, adding that BMW would continue to ride ahead with double-digit growth.
In the second quarter (April–June), BMW retailed 4,507 cars clocking 17 per cent year-on-year growth.
Brar said in the electric luxury segment too, BMW achieved number one brand selling 2,359 EVs units, growing by 78 per cent and contributing a whopping 26 per cent in total sales.
“Our decisive hold on electric cars too with 69 per cent market share in luxury EVs has solidified BMW India as the number one choice in the luxury EV segment,” he noted, adding that every fourth BMW car sold today is an EV.
In the popular SUV segment, which it calls Sports Activity Vehicles, BMW and MINI sales climbed 35 per cent y-o-y at 5,926 units. BMW SUVs clocked a growing share in sales at 65 per cent, the company said.
Brar said BMW will introduce 14 more new models till December 2026 to attract younger customers into its fold.
In the first half of this year, the brand launched 11 new products including the BMW X3 30d, BMW M440i, BMW X6 M60i, MINI Countryman C, BMW F 450 GS and BMW M 1000 R.
