Pune: Swedish luxury carmaker Volvo Car is planning to bring three new pure electric models to the Indian market with the electric luxury car market steadily gaining ground with buyers increasingly adopting electric vehicles for daily commutes and weekend use.
“With the sales of electric cars rising in India, we plan to offer a balanced portfolio of electric vehicles and mild hybrids,” Jyoti Malhotra, MD at Volvo Car India told Financial Chronicle.
He said the automaker was also evaluating bringing the potential for plug-in hybrid electric vehicles in the country.
"Our strategy to strengthen our electric portfolio is very simple. We will bring one electric car every year,” Malhotra said.
The company introduced its all-new electric luxury SUV, the EX90 priced at Rs 1.26 crore.
The company's next electric vehicle launch is expected to be the new Volvo ES90 sedan.
The 6-seater family SUV, the EX90 marks Volvo’s first-ever software-defined vehicle offering in the Indian market. It is developed on Volvo’ new SPA2 platform.
At present Volvo sells two all-electric models in India called EX30 and EC40. It also offers mild-hybrid XC60 and XC90.
Malhotra said its electric vehicles currently account for one-fourth of Volvo's total sales in India. “This will increase with buyers opting for electric cars in the country,” he noted.
Luxury electric car and SUV sales led by BMW and Mercedes jumped 61 per cent to a new high of 5,404 EVs in FY2026 over the previous year as per the industry and Vahan retail sales data.
