Maruti Suzuki Dispatches 1 Million Vehicles Via In-Plant Railway Terminals in 3 Years
The automaker began operations from its in-plant railway siding at Hansalpur in Gujarat in March 2023, followed by the Manesar facility in Haryana in June 2025
Maruti Suzuki, India’s biggest car maker, on Friday said it has dispatched 1 million vehicles through in-plant railway terminals since 2023, marking a milestone in its shift towards rail-based vehicle transportation.
The automaker began operations from its in-plant railway siding at Hansalpur in Gujarat in March 2023, followed by the Manesar facility in Haryana in June 2025.
Operations from in-plant railway sidings at Hansalpur (Gujarat) commenced in March 2023 and from the Manesar (Haryana) railway siding in June 2025.
Maruti said out of the 10 lakh cars dispatched through the two railway sidings so far, around 7.9 lakh units were transported from Gujarat, while the Manesar siding handled 2.1 lakh vehicles.
As of August 31, the carmaker's rail-based vehicle dispatches had crossed 3 lakh units during the fiscal year.
An in-plant railway terminal inside a manufacturing facility allows goods to be loaded onto freight trains within the plant, eliminating the need for trucks to access the nearest railway stations before entering the supply network.
"Reaching one million cumulative vehicle dispatches through our in-plant railway sidings marks a landmark achievement in our green logistics journey,” said Hisashi Takeuchi, MD & CEO, at Maruti Suzuki India.
These sidings demonstrate how integrated multi-modal infrastructure can deliver both operational efficiencies and environmental benefits, he noted.
Maruti Suzuki is the first and only automaker in India to have in-plant railway sidings at its manufacturing facilities.
The company said the shift of vehicle transportation from road to rail through these in-plant facilities has helped avoid greenhouse gas emissions, while reducing fuel consumption and easing overall road congestion.
"Our share of rail-based vehicle dispatches has grown from 5 per cent in FY 2014-15 to 26.5 per cent in FY 2025-26. Our mid-term goal is to increase rail-based vehicle dispatches to 35 per cent by FY 2030-31 through continued investment in rail infrastructure, including an in-plant siding at our new Kharkhoda facility," Takeuchi said.
