TIRUPURYet another beef row is brewing in the rural backyard of Tamil Nadu as the Kangeyam muncipalty in Erode has demolished all the beef and pork shops in Kangeyam. In the small town that is popular for the sturdy Kangeyam bulls, 16 beef and pork shops were functioning in the weekly market area for the past many years. However, in a sudden clampdown on Friday, the Kangeyam municipal administration demolished the shops on the grounds that they were unauthorised and a health hazard to local residents.

The shops owners alleged that the shops were demolished without prior notice. A shop owner and former municipal councillor of Kangeyam, Angappan, said, “the stalls were being run for the past several decades and we paid usage charges to the municipality till 2005.

Meanwhile, the administration exempted us from paying rent and we were permitted to run the shops. However, the health officials, in a sudden move, demolished the shops on Friday.”

Officials said that the permission was given to run shops only Saturday and Sunday and the stalls should not be opened on Fridays. “Officials took action without alerting us before and they also seized about 50 kg of meat.”

The stall owners submitted a memorandum to the municipality administration for demanding to permit them to run the shops regularly. “Officials should let the beef and pork shops to continue by collecting rent from the stall owners,” said the former councillor.
