Hyderabad: A lady doctor committed suicide at Medipally allegedly due to harassment by her husband. The lady doctor’s family alleged that her husband B. Prithviraj, a doctor, had murdered her.

The victim, Dr B. Bhavani, was found hanging from the ceiling of her house. Police booked a case against Dr Prithviraj for dowry death.

The couple has a six-month-old son. Police said that Bhavani hanged herself at around 8 pm on Monday. “The couple quarreled over some issue a few hours before the incident,” said inspector B Naveen Reddy.

Dr Bhavini’s relatives said that Prithiviraj had been harassing her for dowry and used to assault her. The harassment intensified in the last two weeks. The victim's in-laws, D. Satyaraj and D. Sreevani, also harassed her asking for dowry.

“At the time of marriage we had given a dowry of Rs 5 lakh, 100 gram gold and 500 gram silver. But her in-laws and husband kept on demanding more money,” said the victim’s elder sister Swati.

After Dr Bhavani’s relatives came to know about her death they approached the police and alleged that it was a murder.

When the police did not respond seriously they staged a protest in front of the Medipally police station. The police later assured that action will be taken against those involved.

Dr Bhavani, who passed MBBS from China, was working at the Aditya Hospital in Uppal, where her husband also worked earlier. Six months ago she stopped working as she had a son.

Dr Bhavani, who belongs to Warangal, was living with her husband in an apartment at PNT Colony. Her father Lingamurthy is a fruit vendor at Warangal.

Police registered an FIR against Dr Prithviraj under Section 304 (b) and 34 for dowry death.
