KOZHIKODE: Acting on the widespread protest against top cops of Kozhikode for allegedly tormenting to death a young police officer for an offence he committed by mistake, Home minister Ramesh Chennithala ordered ADGP north zone Nitin Agarwal on Sunday to inquire into the background that led AT Shaji, 39, a civil police officer, here to take the extreme step.

Addressing media at Thiruvananthapuram, Mr Chennithala said that the incident was “unfortunate”. “The suspension of the policeman cannot be accepted”, he said, adding that strict action would be uninitiated against those responsible for the incident after receiving the report of the ADGP.

Shaji was found hanging at his house allegedly due to the mental agony he suffered after being suspended because of inadvertently sending an obscene image on a whatsapp group.

Meanwhile, the State Human Rights Commission chairman J.B. Koshy told Deccan Chronicle that the Commission was taking the issue seriously. “Anyway now the Home minister has intervened and the ADGP has been asked to submit a report. Let us wait till the report is submitted”, he said.

Shaji, a civil police officer at Nadakavu station, got a fake obscene image of a schoolgirl which had been forwarded by her parent demanding action. Instead of sending the image to the whatsapp number of his higher official, Shaji had sent it to another group called ‘Our responsibility to Children’ (ORS) which comprises the DIG, Sub-judge, parents and lady teachers.
