Nellore: The Nellore Municipal Corporation officials are upset with the urban development minister P. Narayana, for the way he dealt with them while they were carrying out flood relief works during last one week. The staff is forced to ignore rest after working for 18 hours a day beca-use of late night visits of the minister. The minister's open remarks during a review that he should have transferred the commissioner and superintending engineer caused heartburn to the civic body staff.

The heavy rains and inundation of several parts of city put them in tight spot and the minister comments were the last straw. Incidentally, the two officers as well as engineering and sanitary wing staff have been working without break since Rottela Panduga held in the last week of October. The outbreak of viral and dengue fevers thereafter placed them in a piquant situation.

After coming to know about the unprecedented number of people suffering from viral fevers, Chief Minister lambasted the NMC staff and directed them to de-silt all the irrigation canals going through the town during his visit to Nellore in the first week of November.
He told them that he would comeback within 10 days to inspect the city and take action against NMC officials if there is no improvement in the situation.

“We are forced to remain on roads to maintain hygienic conditions as everyone blamed us for the poor sanitation in Nellore and we did our best. However, unprecedented rainfall of 85 cm in three days and encroachments on the irrigation canals washed away all our good work. Unfortunately, even those who are aware of our toil have been blaming us now,” a sanitary wing official said.
