Visakhapatnam: Several studies provided indisputable evidence that a healthy family starts with a healthy woman. That's what has driven Bollywood supermodel Milind Soman to take up a new personal mission - promoting healthy lifestyle in women across India.

Speaking to Deccan Chronicle, Mr Milind Soman, who has been in Vizag to participate in “Vizag Going Pink” on Nov. 29, a women-only marathon aimed at raising awareness on healthy lifestyle practices, said, “The first step in women empowerment starts with taking control of their own health – the most prized possession. Women should understand and celebrate the value they bring to the family and society. Women should make their own health a priority.”

Leaving many in deep wonder, Mr. Milind successfully completed his first Ironman Triathlon in 2015 at an age of 50 years in 15 hours – which comprised of a 3.8-km swim, a 180.2-km cycle ride and a 42-km run.

Explaining his fitness regimen, “I started swimming at 10 years and since then it took me all the way to the Indian National Swimming team and several national championships. My passion towards fitness has only grown with time.”

The Pinkathon, which was kick-started by Milind Soman in 2012, is now organised in more than 8 cities and at least 60,000 women took part in this event in 2015.

When asked why he chose the route of Pinkathon, Mr. Soman said people are increasingly being affected with non-communicable diseases such as hypertension, diabetes and cardiac conditions. “It’s high time to create awareness among people about these diseases. We are here to inspire people, to make more join our mission of fitness. People should stop calling someone as a fitness freak. They can themselves become on,” he said.
