KOZHIKODE: Mayor’s Bhavan here will have a new host after a gap of five years. Mayor V.K.C Mammed Koya will move into the historic bungalow that his predecessor Prof A.K. Premajam used only as a meeting place.

But the new mayor finds it “more practical” for performing his duties staying here. The businessman-politician who took over the mayoralty on Wednesday said he would shift to the official residence after some maintenance works.

He is the 22nd mayor of the 53-year old corporation. “The council decided to have an official residence for the mayor when P. Kuttikrishnan Nair (1966-68) was in office. That’s how they converted the resthouse into the Mayor’s Bhavan,” ex-mayor M. Bhaskaran recollects.

However, not all mayors stayed there. Mr Bhaskaran, who was in office 2005-2010, was the last to stay here. The one-storey structure built on an acre of land carries Kerala architectural style with colonial elements.
