Alappuzha: The CPM Mannar area committee has sacked   Mr E.N. Narayanan,  who contested and won the election to the Thripperunthura panchayat president violating the party directive on Thursday.  Local committee member Sadasivan Pillai and  panchayat member D. Gopalakrishnan were also dismissed from the party.

Mr Saji Cheriyan, district secretary, said that they had acted against the party decision to make  the CPI member the president.   “We have moved the court against the election. The decision to sack the trio was taken by the area committee which was approved by the  district committee,” he said.

In the 17-member panchayat,  Mr Narayanan  won with seven  votes against four each secured by the UDF and the BJP candidates.  Two members- the CPM’s Jenu Jacob and the lone CPI member- abstained from  voting.

According to the local party leaders, the district unit had  imposed a junior member, Jenu Jacob, for the post of president  brushing aside the  decision of the Thripperunthura and Chennithala local committees to   nominate  Mr Narayanan for the post.

Later, the district committee proposed half term each for Mr Jenu and Mr Narayanan, which was not accepted.  On election day, it proposed  fielding the lone CPI member, but none backed the idea. “The district secretary’s arrogance led to this situation,”  the  local leaders alleged.
