West Godavari team bags handball championship

Two teams from Kurnool came to participate only one team

Nellore: Senior women's team of West Godavari district has bagged the championship in state-level handball competitions held in Nellore on Sunday. The two-day event held at Dodla Kousalyamma Women's College here concluded with finals on Sunday.

West Godavari defeated Srikakulam women's team with a difference of 8-4 goals. With 7 goals to her credit, N. Manisha of West Godavari pa-ved way for her team's victory. West Godavari team made to finals after defeating Kadapa team, 9-6, and Srikak-ulam entered into finals after Kurnool team voluntarily withdrew.

Incidentally, there was high drama when two teams from Kurnool came to participate while the state association recognized only one team as eligible to play. The recognised team withdrew from semi finals allegedly after the other team threatened them.

Union minister M. Venkaiah Naidu's son and Muppavarapu foundation chairman M. Harshavardhan presented a trophy and Rs 10,000 cash prize to West Godavari team and Rs 3000 to Srikakulam team and Rs 2000 to Guntur team.

State Handball Associ-ation in-charge secretary T. Kondal Rao, SA-AP director Ravindra, Janardhan Raju of Muppavarapu Foun-dation and district sports development officer K. Yethiraj were present.
