Hyderabad: House-to-house enumeration to update the National Population Register by seeding it with Aadhaar card data will begin on Monday and end on December 15.

People have to keep documents such as Aadhaar card/ EID acknowledgement, ration card, EPIC, driving licence or any government-approved identity card ready to provide data. People would also have to provide their mobile phone number. According to instructions sent to the district collectors by the Centre, the NPR would be updated based on the Census 2011.

The Census data would be cross-checked by enumerators in every household and additions and deletions made in the NPR. Government teachers have been tasked with collecting the data.

Teachers associations, however, are seeking exemption on the ground that several working days would be lost for the exercise, at a time when government schools are lagging behind in syllabus coverage due to the delay in supplying textbooks this year. About 70 per cent of the 1.15 lakh government teachers have been assigned enumeration duties.

“Classes in government schools were disrupted for nearly 40 days due to the teacher transfer process during July-August. There have been 30 holidays for festivals like Bonalu, Dasara and Diwali since June. The NPR duties will result in disruption for one more month. Though officials are asking us to attend NPR duties after school hours, it is not possible,” said Mr A. Narsi Reddy, president, TS-UTF.

PRTU-TS president A.Sarotham Reddy said, “The supply of textbooks was delayed this year. Some schools are yet to receive textbooks though half the school year is over. The NPR duties for teachers would further affect the students.”
