Chennai: When chief metropolitan magistrate S. Ganesan denied bail to folk singer Kovan and said he would be in police custody for two days, his son Charuvagan looked a little disappointed but wasn’t entirely crestfallen.

Both Kovan’s advocates and family were expecting a five-day police custody, but were relieved on coming to know that it was only two days.

The magistrate also mentioned that Kovan’s advocates would be allowed to meet him twice each day if Kovan preferred it.

On being asked how his family was reacting to this sudden change of events in their lives, Charuvagan, 24, himself an advocate, said while his family wished that Kovan would get out of jail fast, they took pride in the fact that Kovan does what he wants to.

“He has been doing this for over 30 years and even now with this video, it is continuing to attract thousands of views even though it has become a sedition case. So, we will always be proud of him, “ he said. Drawing comparison with M.M. Kalburgi, Kannada writer who was recently shot dead, Charuvagan said while the whole country is getting increasingly tense with many claiming that freedom of speech is at a risk, yet nothing would deter his father or other artistes from expressing their views.

Crying foul over the sedition charge, both Charuvagan and Kovan’s advocates claim that evidence is not sufficient or valid enough to strengthen that charge and therefore it should be retracted at the earliest. Kovan will be produced before the magistrate at his residence on Sunday evening for the next hearing.
