New Delhi: The Delhi court’s verdict sentencing Uber driver Shiv Kumar Yadav to life for raping a 25-year old woman passenger was welcomed by her father. He said that his daughter has ‘moved on’ and has settled into a new life abroad, according to a report in Indian Express.

The father revealed that she got married last month to a man she was engaged to before the crime took place.

“The ceremony was a very small affair. Apart from the groom’s parents, and us only very close relatives on both sides attended… only 12 of us were present. We are happy that our daughter is fine now. She has moved on and is settled in her new life,” the father was quoted saying in the report.

He expressed happiness at both the court’s verdict and at his daughter’s marriage. He added that she has secured a job abroad and that the newly married couple are busy building a new life together and do not want to be reminded of the past.

“We do not want to be reminded about what happened. We do not want our daughter or her in-laws to remember at any point of time in their lives that something like this had ever taken place. We just want to forget this incident now. That is why we have consciously decided to never ever discuss this incident again,” the father said.

However, he also lauded the court’s verdict and said it will serve as a deterrent for potential rapists from committing the heinous crime.

“This is justice”, the father said with satisfation.

According to the prosecution, the incident took place on the night of December 5 last year, when the 25-year-old victim was heading home.

The rape occurred days before the second anniversary of that now notorious attack, which earned Delhi the title of India's "rape capital", and brought the issue of violence against women back into the spotlight.

Uber was officially banned from Delhi in the aftermath of the attack, but the ban has not been strictly enforced and the company's cars continue to operate in the capital.
