16 ‘sexually tortured’ kids rescued from private hostel

SALEMThe Salem district administration rescued 15 girls and a boy staying in the hostel of a private school following complaint of sexual harassment by the hostel owner.
A class 6 girl who escaped from the hostel last week lodged a complaint with the Salem police that the hostel owner was sexually harassing her. 
 
The hostel warden, Maria, and the hostel owner David are absconding. The Salem police have launched a search for them. The hostel of a private school functions at the Ayyan Thirumaligai housing board tenements. There were 15 girls and a boy between the age group of six and 16 in the hostel. 
Meanwhile, the district child protection officer 
A. Devaki inspected the hostel and submitted a report to the district collector V. Sampath.
 
“The 16 children have been rescued and sheltered in the Life Line Trust reception centre at Ramnagar. They will be handed over to their parents,” said the officer. The Child Welfare Committee chairman A. Xavier also conducted an inquiry with the children.
