Thrissur: Factionalism in the Congress in Thrissur has a new reason to rear its head: the candidature of C. B. Geetha in the elections to the corporation. Ms Geetha is the daughter of cooperation minister and leader of the 'I' faction C. N. Balakrishnan.

It is understood that Mr Balaksrishnan has made it clear to the party leadership that his daughter will be the party's candidate for the mayor's post in the corporation.

The 'I' group, which considers Thrissur as its stronghold, is in no mood even to negotiate on the post.

The rival faction, headed DCC president O. Abdurahman Kutty, has, however, no plans to concede the claim.

They point out that Ms Geetha is a novice in politics and it would be suicidal for the UDF to project her as the mayoral candidate.

They also point out that the minister's name was dragged into the controversy related to the murder of Congress workers in the district.
