Hyderabad: The Hyderabad High Court on Thursday dismissed an election petition challenging the election of Congress’ Puvvada Ajay Kumar from Khammam Assembly constituency in Telangana in the 2014 general elections.

Thummala Nageswara Rao, at present a minister in the K. Chandrasekhar Rao Cabinet, had been defeated by Mr Ajay Kumar.

Mr Rao had moved an election petition alleging that the Congress candidate had won the election by indulging in various malpractices, including bribing voters.

He urged the court to declare the election as illegal, null and void. Mr Kumar meanwhile moved an application before the High Court contesting the election petition, urging the court to reject it.

Justice M.S. Ramachandra Rao, after perusing the evidence and rival contentions placed before him by both the parties said, “I am of the opinion that application of the respondent (Mr Ajay Kumar) deserves to be allowed on the ground that the election petition does not disclose any cause of action to set aside the election of the applicant.”

While allowing the application of Mr Kumar, the judge dismissed the election petition.
