Thrissur: A team  of doctors from different hospitals in Kerala and Tamil Nadu  successfully removed the heart, liver, kidneys and eyes from a brain-dead patient at Daya General Hospital in the city on Thursday for transplantation in patients  in other hospitals.
 
The heart was  flown to Fortis Malar Hospital in Chennai in a chartered flight at 1 pm. The doctors,  including Dr Murali from Chennai and Dr Balu Mohan from Daya Hospital, harvested  the organs during the surgery lasting from 9 am till 12 noon.
 
The donor was Ashokan, 29, of  Cheruthuruthy in Thrissur,  who had met with a bike accident last week and was declared brain-dead at Daya Hospital on Wednesday night.  
 
Ashokan, a school bus driver, was a CPM functionary and his wedding was  to be held on November 15.
 
Programme officer at the hospital Shelbin Francis told DC  that the brother of the deceased consented to donate the organs.  
 
The  officials of Mrit-hasanjeevani scheme of the state government  were alerted seeking assistance to find potential receivers on Wednesday evening.
 
“The receiver of the heart is  a  retired bureaucrat from Punjab, aged 65, undergoing treatment at Fortis. The liver will be transplanted  on  a patient in Lakeshore Hospital in Kochi, Kidneys have been sent to KIMS in Thiruvanathapuram and the Jubilee Mission Hospital  received the eyes” Dr Balu Mohan, the neurosurgeon at Daya Hospital said.
