Kozhikode: The excise shadow team on Thursday arrested M Savad (37), a native of Mankavu and seized 1.45 kg brown sugar worth around Rs 1.5 crore from Pantheerankavu.

The shadow team members trapped the accused after approaching him as customers. Excise officials said Savad is a member of a bigger racket that smuggled heroin and brown sugar to Kuwait.

Officials said Savad had undergone imprisonment in Kuwait for drug trafficking.

He returned to Kerala after the completion of his sentence and used the contacts he developed in prison to continue the trade. Savad had purchased the brown sugar in Delhi for retail sales in Kozhikode and also to smuggle to Kuwait.

He used to sell brown sugar in 10 ml packets for Rs 150. He used special booking agents to sell the drugs to college and school students, officials added.

Excise senior officials got secret information regarding Savad from the drug traffickers based in Gulf countries and the excise team had kept Savad under surveillance.

Savad was produced before the magistrate's court and was remanded. Further investigation is on.
