THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Political and social leaders have warned against the attempts to misinterpret the ideals of Sree Narayana Guru.

Speaking at  the 88th Guru samadhi celebrations at Chempazhanthy, near here, and at Sivagiri, they urged the people not to drag Guru into unnecessary controversies.

CPM state secretary Kodiyeri Balakrishnan alleged at Chempazhanthy that there was a planned move to make the social reformer a Hindu god.

The misinterpretation of Guru’s ideals was an insult to  him,  and through such attempts anti-social elements were trying to make society regressive, he said.

Home Minister Ramesh Chennithala also echoed similar sentiments and  said  Guru does not belong to a particular community and a certain period.

Taking a dig at the SNDP Yogam, Mr Kodiyeri alleged that it was making a concerted attempt  to defame  Guru by joining hands with the BJP.

There were  some evil forces trying to pull back the Ezhava community from progress and a campaign was  on misinterpreting Guru’s teachings, he said.

“Guru is not an imagination, he is real. A great social reformer like Narayana Guru’s ideals are being misinterpreted which amounts to insulting him. The clashes in the name of religion will finally end up being a  fight against the religions of their sponsors,”  said Mr Kodiyeri in his veiled attack on the  SNDP Yogam.

While inaugurating the Samadhi celebrations, Mr Chennithala said nobody can carry away Guru's teachings. He asked everyone not to politicise Guru’s teachings by setting aside his spiritual work.

“Guru is not anybody’s asset. Guru’s vision can’t be politicised by separating it from its spiritual core or that his teachings can’t be confined to a particular community or period,”  he  said.

Sree Narayana Dharma Sangham Trust general secretary Swami Rithambaranada  said at Sivagiri Mutt that  unfortunately, politicians were dragging the social reformer into unwanted controversies. Excise Minister K. Babu, who  inaugurated the samadhi celebrations, said that Ezhava community has the power to oppose those who work against it.

BJP state president V. Muraleedharan opined that Guru’s teachings like ‘whatever be the religion, let man be virtuous’ are based on Hindu dharma.
