KOZHIKODE: After a brief lull, incidents of stray dog bites are on the rise setting alarm bells for civilians as well as local administrators.
On Thursday, six including two children suffered stray attack in Peruvayal gram panchayat limits. On the same day, five faced attack in Kadalundi, including a kid from Tamil Nadu.
People complain that places like Peruvayal, Poovattuparamba, Kuttikkattoor, Velliparamba, Payyanakkal, Padannavalappu and Pattarthod areas are under the threat of strays and authorities are apathetic.
Kozhikode Corporation health standing committee chairperson Janamma Kunjunni said, according to a government order, strays would be sterilised throughout the state for eight days beginning on September 22.
“Stray dogs would be sterilised and vaccinated and would be left at the place from where they had been caught,” she explained.
Recently, the government announced a token prize of Rs 250 for those who come with their pet dog for vaccination in the nearest veterinary hospital.
Sterilised dogs could be identified by a mark made on their ear. Besides, a statewide awareness campaign on the stray menace will be carried out from October 1.
But this time, locals are not taking such assurances for granted. “Corporation commenced the Animal Birth Control (ABC) project with much fanfare and sterilised a few dogs. After the initial enthusiasm, there is nothing to be heard of,” fumes Abdu Rahman P., a native of West Hill.
Mrs Kunjunni said that ABC project would be restarted according to the government guidelines.
