Futuristic Central Square for Chennai at Rs 400 crore

In an ambitious plan to decongest the area outside Chennai Central station, the Tamil Nadu government on Tuesday unveiled a Rs 400 crore proposal to develop a world-class Central Square in the area.

Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa said the world-class square will be built by Chennai Metro Rail to ensure free flow of traffic. Elaborating on the project, she said the facility will have underground parking and pedestrian walkways connecting all suburban stations in the area, the general hospital, various government buildings including Ripon Buildings, Government General Hospital, Southern Railway headquarters and the historic Victoria Public Hall. 
 
“The presence of corporation headquarters, hospitals and commercial establishments in Sowcarpet adds to the existing congestion and there is s need for an upgraded traffic system”, Jayalalithaa said while making a statement under rule 110 in the state assembly.
 
She emphasised that Chennai Central square will enhance the arterial thoroughfare as a well planned transit points for long distance express trains, suburban EMU trains, MRTS and the fledgling metro rail benefiting the public.
