KOZHIKODE: “Since large  hydroelectric power projects are not possible in the state, we have to depend on  small-scale power projects,”  said Chief Minister Oommen Chandy. He was inaugurating the  Adyanpara power project, the  first hydro-electric project  of Malappuram district,  and Adyanpara hydel tourism, on Thursday.

The commissioning of the project would solve the  power shortage in Malappuram to a great extent. It  has used 18.15 acres, including 3.96 acres of forest land.  The 3.5-megawatt hydro-electric project has been set up  at Kanjirappuzha near Adyanpara waterfalls in Nilambur.

The project was completed ahead of  time and with less  than the  estimated cost.  Load-shedding and power cuts will be avoided for the next five years in the district, he said.

A check dam of 5.56-m height has been  constructed to take water to the powerhouse to generate  electricity.  The water would be  recycled.
